Issue 27

A lot of community news this month – much seems to have happened over the summer. Exciting plans are put forward by the Museum for its Friends – see page 22 – and we have just heard that the Library looks as if it might be revived, though this depends on a Judicial Review starting on 27 September. Many volunteers and helpers are beavering away trying to make it work, and with a bit of luck it will be restored to Bruton, opening for longer hours than the recent one-day opening on Fridays.

Almost all the parishes are putting on Harvest Suppers or Lunches this month or at the beginning of October. See Diary of Events for details. Autumn’s bounty is always celebrated cheerfully in the Benefice.

The Dovecote Fair will not, after all, be taking place this year, but instead the organisers are putting all their energies into reviving the Packhorse Fair next year, on the Diamond Jubilee Bank Holiday, 4 June. They would love any help that anyone can offer, so do contact Lisa or Tia (see page 23).

Bruton The Way Forward has a new Chair in the person of Stuart Adlington (see page 11). This group works closely with the Council to push through improvements, and gets a great deal done for the town, but it could always do with new members and fresh ideas.
The publication of the King James or Authorised Version of the Bible 400 years ago will be celebrated in Bruton on 14 October. Advance notice is being given because tickets are limited, so make a note now and
book your place as soon as possible.

Sad news: many of our readers will already know that Michael Balfour, one of the editors of this magazine, died on 11 August. There will be an appreciation of him in the next issue, and we hope to resume the Q&A series before long.
Elisabeth Balfour
