Issue 35

The Jubilee weekend is here at last, and with it all manner of celebration in Bruton and the Benefice. The Packhorse Fair on Monday 4 June is, of course, the major attraction, and we don’t need to urge everyone to make the most of all that is on offer – stalls, refreshments, music and entertainment in and around Lower Backway from 11am to 6pm. Lamyatt and Shepton Montague (with Hadspen, Bratton Seymour and Pitcombe) have their own parties (see Diary), and there are services in our glorious Benefice churches on the Sunday (see page 32) in thanksgiving for Her Majesty’s sixty years on the throne. Let’s hope the weather encourages us all to enjoy the festivities and put away gloomy thoughts on the economy.

The gallery owners Iwan and Manuela Wirth are aiming to bring real benefits to the district with their hugely ambitious, exciting plans to turn Durslade Farm, on the outskirts of Bruton, into an arts centre. Read about the project on page 11, and have your say at the public consultation on 12/13 July – the Wirths, who love being part of the community here, are very keen to take into account the feelings and thoughts of local residents, and will welcome all constructive comments.
The Guardian Weekend magazine ran an article on Bruton and Castle Cary in its ‘Let’s Move To . . .’ feature on 5 May. It’s a touch misleading here and there – the heading ‘rail put them on the map’ would elicit a double-take from most people trying to get to Bruton from London, and the excellent Bruton School for Girls doesn’t get a look-in, nor does Rickshaw; the two towns are not really differentiated. But it’s nice to be appreciated, even if the metropolitan take-over betrayed by its Farrow & Ball colours is not that obvious to this resident! Elisabeth Balfour
