Issue 32

A bit of good news this month: Bruton Library will reopen on 6 March, with the same hours as it used to have, on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays (see page 13).
We urge everyone to try to use it as much as possible, so that the threat of permanent closure is seen off.

The town council has more good news. A cut in council tax, however small, is very welcome. And it is cheering to read that parking should remain free. The town council staff are NOT moving out of the Dovecote building, incidentally, though the district council people are. See page 30.

A member of our committee has recently observed how much worse the litter problem has become in certain parts of Bruton – particularly along the Plox and in Park Wall Road. The fenced-off area at the foot of the railway bridge at the West End is a disgrace. Who is to blame is not clear, but certainly it is not the pupils of Sexey’s School, who were spotted carefully putting their rubbish into litter bins – it’s nice to be able to give them credit for this public-spiritedness. There are an awful lot of fast-food wrappers among the rubbish, so perhaps the town’s retailers can think up a way of shaming the perpetrators into following the children’s lead.

A new initiative has been set up: Boardroom At the Chapel is designed for owners of small businesses in Bruton and the surrounding district to get together
once a month and offer mutual support and ideas for expanding their client base. The aim is decidedly not to replicate the work or tread on the toes of the Chamber of Commerce or similar groups – on the contrary, Amanda Riley, the Founder and Chair of Boardroom, and Cath Butler of At the Chapel are keen to collaborate with them and especially to find ways of giving something back to
the community. Amanda’s contact details are in Useful Information (page 64). Elisabeth Balfour
