Issue 33

The inhabitants of this county . . . entertain a kind of indifference for the rest of the world, owing, probably, to the good opinion they entertain of their own portion of it. (John Strachey, 1737)

This is one of the splendid quotations on the walls and ceiling of the turret room in the Museum of Somerset at Taunton, which the Friends of Bruton Museum visited on the last day of February. I think we all feel it has a certain aptness! Certainly, everyone I come across in Bruton and district entertains a good opinion of their own little piece of Somerset.

Much seems to be happening in Bruton and the surrounding area. In the High Street, a new cafĂ©, Elle’s, has opened, to general approval; a new business is coming into the former Olive Bowl premises; and the Blue Ball is apparently set to become a restaurant. More about these projects in the next issue, we hope. And a new edition of the leaflet Step into Bruton, which will be extremely useful for all our visitors, is about to be published. Finally, the far-reaching changes in the constitution of the Benefice will be taking place this summer, in all probability, and we shall bring you details when it is all finalised.

The Packhorse Fair is getting nearer, and everyone who wants to be involved in any way is urged to get in touch with the organisers – see page 28. It will be marvellous to have this highly popular event back, and its attractions are likely to draw in everyone from the town and surrounding villages – those that don’t have their own Jubilee celebrations on 4 June, that is!

The members of the Dove committee and all our contributors wish our readers a very happy and
joyful Easter.
Elisabeth Balfour
