Issue 34

There are currently important developments going on in Bruton, and you can read about them in Stuart Adlington’s report for Bruton The Way Forward (page 13), John Bishton’s on the Bruton Trust (page 15) and Roger Gallannaugh’s article about the excavations in the Abbey field (page 15). Please, do take the opportunity to look at the proposals and make your comments – the plans will have far-reaching consequences and now is the chance to make your mark on the town’s future. The various bodies are displaying their ideas at the Packhorse Fair, which takes place on the Jubilee Bank Holiday, Monday 4 June.

May is full of other joys – the Diary is packed with interesting things to do throughout the month, see below – but many people will be concentrating their energies on 4 June. The Packhorse Fair is making a very welcome return, and there will be numerous stalls, live music all day, food and drink and the famous (and gloriously funny) Bruton Drag Race. Unmissable.
Lamyatt and Shepton Montague have their own Jubilee celebrations, and if you’re very nifty (and have the stamina) you might manage to fit in a visit to all three of them. Lamyatt’s is mainly on the Sunday, but the lighting of the beacon is on the Monday, while Shepton Montague, Hadspen, Pitcombe and Bratton Seymour are clubbing together to have a ceilidh in the barn at Hadspen House.
Other events particularly recommended are the St Aldhelm Flower Festival, in St Mary’s from 25 May, and the Bruton Choral Society Jubilee Concert on Saturday 26th, which will be of a very high standard, with a good-sized orchestra.
