Issue 25

The extraordinary run of dry weather in April came to a sudden end with downpours in early May. Let’s hope the sunshine will return for the summer – though we do need a lot more rain, and you could sense the earth opening up thirstily to embrace the life-giving torrents. The smell was wonderful.

Does Bruton have its own micro-climate? We often think so – what happens over the Benefice does not always seem to be predicted in even fairly localised forecasts. And sometimes it’s pouring in the town but dry and sunny only a very few miles away, or the reverse. No doubt our weather and gardening guru will have something to say about this!
Summer is a time for enjoyment, and the season of jollification kicks off with the Lamyatt Fête on Sunday 19 June. The sublimely silly Sheep-racing is only one of the highlights, and the party atmosphere is inviting.
This same weekend, Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th, there is a wonderful Floral Art display in the garden at Cole Manor. Details of these events are in the Diary.
The St Mary’s Church Fête follows on 9 July, and needs volunteers to help run stalls, as well as contributions of bric-à-brac, books and so on. Please contact the Church Office, 813 080, Monday to Friday 10–12.30, or adminbruben@btinternet.com. The sooner offers of help come in, the better, so don’t delay.
There are other marvellous events planned for later in the summer: in Batcombe (Raise the Roof, 23 July), Upton Noble (Treasure Hunt, 20/21 August) and Shepton Montague (Fête, 28 August). More details of these will appear in the next issue of The Dove.
Finally, St Mary the Virgin, Bruton – A Brief History by John Bishton has just been published, to wide acclaim. It’s on sale for only £5 in the Church Office, the Community Office, at Bailey Hill Bookshop in Castle Cary, and elsewhere. The Editors
