Issue 24

As the spring turns to early summer, a very important date should be in everyone’s diary. Elections for the Town Council and the South Somerset District Council take place on 5 May, and, not only that, the referendum on whether the UK should adopt the Alternative Vote system. Votes are cast in the Community Hall, as usual, and everyone will have had the relevant literature to enable them to make up their minds. Do please use your democratic right to vote.

On a less serious and perhaps more entertaining note, the annual Bruton Festival of Arts takes place throughout most of May, with the first event on the 8th, while the main Festival party happens on the 14th at the Bruton Castle. The final event is a quiz on Bank Holiday Monday 30th. In between there is a wide-ranging programme of events to suit most tastes, with plenty of music, literary happenings and the Art Trail around the town. Most of the events are free, and take place in a variety of venues. Tickets/bookings are necessary for Food and Fiction, the Life Drawing Workshop, the Writing Sweatshop and the RSVP Bhangra band session. The advertisement on pages 42/43 has full details, and all events are also listed in the Diary (pages 4/9).
If the outdoors is more your thing, gardens and flowers are looking their best now, and there are several plant sales to tempt the green-fingered – at Hadspen, Shepton Montague and Yarlington House as well as in Bruton Community Hall. The Horticultural Society and the Flower Club are in their element, and on 6 May there is a special arrangement in the window of Rachel the Hairdressers to mark National Flower Arranging Day. Gants Mill and Garden are open to visitors on 8 May. Please read through the Diary for more information on all these events, and enjoy the season!
